Trip Summary

Easy - For beginners with standard SUV/4WDs (new to 4wding)

-Trip is pencilled in at this stage for July, likely to be 2-3 weeks long and leaving on the 12th. We'll be going from East to West.

-The drive to Birdsville will be leisurely and likely to loosely follow this itinerary. We'll cross the desert also in a leisurely fashion, enjoying the sights, eating like royalty, and enjoying some photography and other things along the way.

-The drive back will be via lake eyre and will either be a quick run with early starts and long days of driving if we need to be back in a hurry or, if we have time and a third week off, we'll take it a bit easier and spend more time seeing the sights.

  • Dates tentative - please free to contribute to the discussion around which times of year would suit you best.
  • Experienced travellers only.
  • 4 cars max to keep logistics simple and the convoy moving at a respectable pace.

You will need to ensure you are properly prepared for the trip, including:

  • Quality steel belted tyres + at least 2 spare wheels + repair kit
  • Spare parts for your vehicle
  • Decent shockies
  • Vehicle thoroughly serviced and have addressed any items needing attention
  • Enough fuel capacity for the simpson crossing and the distances between towns on the trip
  • Air compressor, UHF, recovery gear, and suitable rated points on your vehicle
  • Be prepared for the flies!

Our trip will take us the long way round the Simpson along Rig Rd past some landmarks and places of interest. Returning will be along the Oodnadatta Tk via the south side of Lake Eyre N and Lake Eyre S to do some sightseeing, then via Marree and up Strzelecki Track. Time permitting we'll check out any sights around that area then down past Cameron Corner and the Sturt NP, then south to Wilcannia where we'll leave to return home.

There is a fair bit of planning and preparation required for this trip so we can schedule a meeting and a catch up at some point prior.
